Re: Child Custody Discrimination
The Women's Coalition is submitting a Complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Council's Working Group on Discrimination against Women in Law and Practice.
We are asking this important Working Group to make "Child Custody Discrimination" a thematic priority for the Human Rights Council and to subsequently push governments to enact and enforce a new system which will provide due process and equal protection for women and children. The Women's Coalition will be giving them a description of the proposed system.
YOUR story is needed: Every Voice Counts!
You can fill out a form [see below] or submit a narrative detailing how custody was taken away from you and given to the father.
[NOTE: If you already submitted your story to the UN Commission on the Status of Women, it will be included in the Complaint, so please DO NOT re-submit.]
SUBMIT a brief summary in any language of how you lost custody to: [email protected] by Nov. 30th. You may fill out this form if you wish: http://bit.ly/1sqh3Or [See below for instructions.]
WHO SHOULD SUMBIT:
Any woman who was the primary nurturer of her children and that role was taken away, i.e. if you were not able to keep primary custody after divorce or separation. This is not just for "protective mothers". It is for all mothers who were reduced to half-time or less with their children due to a family court ruling, whether there was overt abuse or not.
NOTE: If you submitted your story to the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2015 or 2016, it will be included in the Complaint, so please DO NOT re-submit.
ABOUT THE WORKING GROUP:
The Human Rights Council creates “Special Procedures,” which are individuals or groups of independent experts that monitor and investigate particular human rights issues, and report back to the Human Rights Council. The Working Group on Gender Discrimination in Law and Practice comes under this UN mandate.
This Working Group has been tasked with pushing governments to enact and enforce effective gender equality laws. Established in 2010 by the U.N. Human Rights Council, the Working Group on the Issue of Discrimination against Women in Law and Practice started its work a year later.
Human Rights Council gave this Working Group a unique and broad mandate – it covers discrimination both in law and in practice. In short, it covers women’s rights to equality, encompassing all human rights of women.
Not only does the Working Group report to the Human Rights Council annually on thematic priorities – which so far have included political and public participation; economic and social life of women; family and culture; and health and safety – it has also conducted 11 visits to countries, and sent governments some 170 “communications,” basically allegations of human rights violations in either specific cases or general situations.
